Teacher's Comments

Practice Task 1:
Well done for putting your powerpoint online. It also shows a sound level of research, which has very clearly impacted on the quality of your production. I am very impressed by your eye for detail, the selection of image and clear sense of how to control layout and design effectively. Obviously, the image is not your own, but everything about the piece you have produced suggests you have A grade potential. However, remember that the brief called for two front covers, so next time you need to doggedly stick to the task.

Practice Task 2: Photography:
I am very impressed by your photography. You have a really good eye for lighting and have gone beyond the simple set of images I asked for to experiment with camera settings. Have a look at the images that are particularly effective and make a note of the settings for iris, iso and shutter. This will really help you to make decisions about these setting when it comes to the assessed coursework task.

I'm looking forward to seeing the mock assessment piece (music magazine and website) to see how well you marry your excellent photography with you attention to layout and design.

Definite A grade potential.

Practice Task 3:Magazine and Website:
You've done a fantastic job here. I'll get to the grade for the piece overall, but let me start by saying that the way you are taking advice and putting it into practice (I am referring to the recording of the camera settings) is outstanding.

Production:
You have done a fabulous job here. It is really convincing as a magazine and your attention to anchoring text and use of images is spot on. There are two things I would have changed. Firstly, I think that the main image you have chosen for your contents page is not the best image you have. Also, the repetition of the caption from the cover may create cohesion through the magazine but it would have been better to use it to develop more insight into the artist and thereby broaden out the representation. Still very good indeed. 23/25

Website:
I'm going to nitpick here, because I'm obsessive in that way, but before I do, WOW! I had been expecting people to make clunky work that needed a lot of improvement, but this is the best website that I have seen in 20 years of teaching. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE give the same focus and effort to your externally examined coursework.

Now to the nitpicking. The blocks of text that go beneath the images in each layer are not evenly distributed. This is potentially a problem with the viewer I am suing to view your website, but it is something that you will need to think about when you come to your real thing. Other than that, I would not change a thing.

Convergence:
You have clearly brought the same sensibilities to your website that you have brought to the contents page of your magazine. There is a call to action and frequent links between the two pieces. I think you need to do something a little special to get into the top section, and I will introduce you to some ideas about this prior to the real things, but still very good. 8/10

In summary:
This is fantastic. 55/60 = A star.
Tiny bit of potential.
Sorry, forget to give the mark for the website. 24/25

PRACTICE TASK 3: MAGAZINE AND WEBSITE

Inspiration:

SHOT LIST:
Experimenting with different lighting, darkness and angles (portraits):

MF
SHUTTER: 1/250
IRIS/APERTURE: 4.5
ISO:1600
(TOO GRAINY-USE HIGHER ISO)
MF
SHUTTER: 1/250
IRIS/APERTURE: 4.5
ISO:1600
(TOO GRAINY-USE HIGHER ISO)
Dark lighting- gives dramatic effect, however, you can't see a clear image of the portrait

MF
ISO:100
IRIS/APERTURE: f 5.6
SHUTTER: 1/25

Could also be used on the contents page
to link to the front cover (which will be
of the same colour scheme)

Good for website: profile/story photo

MF
SHUTTER: 1/50
IRIS/APERTURE: 4.5
ISO:1600
Good for magazine covers: they are mostly
looking down-shows attitude
Looking down slightly at an angle-direct
eye contact with the camera

Most of them have direct mode of address with the camera-as do most
magazine covers
The colour would make the cover seem interesting to the reader-gives some
sort of idea of what the magazine wold be about

Used less vibrant lighting and a different angle (side):

still has straight facial expression
Both photos above:
